- Integrated airbags significantly reduce force on a child’s neck in the event of a frontal collision.
- New innovation showcased at Kind + Jugend, unveiling the most innovative Maxi-Cosi safety concept in 10 years
- Ground breaking technology developed for next generation forward-facing car seats.
- Jury Kind + Jugend trade show was full of praise.
Dorel Juvenile, a division of Dorel Industries (TSX: DII.B, DII.A), and the world’s largest juvenile products manufacturer in its categories, has launched its first airbag technology integrated into child car seats at Kind + Jugend, an international trade show taking place in Cologne, Germany from September 15th to 18th. This new technology has won the most prestigious award in the industry for travelling kids as it sets a new safety standard for child car seat safety. Thanks to the integrated airbag technology in the car seat, the forces on a child’s head and neckduring an accident will be significantly reduced, according to Dorel Juvenile’s test measurements. In case of a collision, two airbags will inflate in the blink of an eye to cushion the head and neck. In the next second, the airbags will automatically deflate.
Integrated airbags: a breakthrough!
“We are very proud to get this recognition from the jury. Dorel Juvenile constantly innovates to ensure that children travel in cars as safely as possilble, “commented Jean-Claude Jacomin, President & CEO of Dorel Juvenile. “Thanks to our new, innovative Maxi-Cosi Air Technology™ we underline our care for precious life. We are convinced that car seats with integrated airbags will become a new standard in terms of innovation and safety of children in cars.”
Maxi-Cosi has invested years of research to achieve this breakthrough innovation. “Years ago we began exploring if and how airbags could better protect a child’s head and neck in forward facing seats, “ stated Eric Viollette, R&D director at Dorel Juvenile Europe. “Successful applications in airbag technology gave inspiration, such as the airbag jackets for motorcyclists and airbag seatbelts in ultralight aircraft that inflate during a collision.” To set a new standard, Maxi-Cosi teamed up with Helite, a French company specializing in mobile airbag technology. “After many years of development and testing, a ground-breaking technology for the next generation forward facing car seats is the outcome. We are confident that our Maxi-Cosi Air Technology™ will significantly improve the protection of a child in a forward facing car seat, resulting in enhanced safety for toddlers. This strongly patented innovation will strengthen our market leadership in car seat child safety.”
How Maxi-Cosi Air Technology™ works?
The Maxi-Cosi Air Technology™ for child car seats can significantly reduce the impact of collisions thanks to a CO2 cartridge with an airbag trigger system integrated into the back of the child car seat. The system detects a collision almost immediately inflating the two airbags in the shoulder pads within a few milliseconds to cushion the head softly. Dorel’s tests prove that Maxi-Cosi Air Technology™ leads to a significant reduction of the forces acting on the neck compared to a standard Maxi-Cosi forward facing car seat. In addition, the deceleration values on the head are decreased in case of a frontal collision compared to such a seat.
